Recently we've come across a rather extreme gas
mileage saving measure the company UPS is going to, whereby management is now planning each truck's delivery route to make as many right turns as possible! Sounds good on paper, but will it work in the real world?
Which got us to thinking, are there even more extreme gas mileage saving tips
everyone should be thinking about? You betcha. While the UPS drivers continue to
drive in circles all day, we hope you enjoy our top 10 list!
10) Push the limits in the slow lane
Studies have shown that up to a point, the slower you go the more gas you save. So, if you can get away with cruising at 30 mph on the expressway then more power to you!
Note: if you’re going to attempt the above gas saving method
to get the best gas mileage it may be wise to don a gray curly-haired wig, or recline your seat as far as it goes with sun glasses on and some music with heavy bass going.
9) Lay off the Krispy Kreme
Even with the balance of the diet coke in your cup holder, too many Americans are
overweight. This means it takes more fuel to transport them in cars, buses, subways and planes.
The less junk in your trunk the further you might go.
8) Fill up often, very
often
Although completely psychological, if you fill up your car every day it will always cost you less than filling up once a week! It also makes you look like a gas rock star at the office when conversation gets to the cost to fill up your car. Imagine the look on your coworkers faces when you spout out
“Only $8 when I filled up yesterday… and the day before… and the day before… and the…”
7) Remove windshield wipers to reduce drag (for
risk takers only)
Every little bit helps! It has been shown that a small percentage of drag comes
from having windshield wipers on your automobile. So, if you're the
betting-type, or live in the desert where rain is very minimal, this could be an
option.
6) Move to Alaska
You may have heard that it helps to fill up your gas tank when it’s cold to get more for your money. So, if you move to a state where average temperatures hover near freezing much of the year, you’ll
now be counting your savings all the way to the bank! (This one is a shout out to you, Joe Six-pack!)
5) Get a fast food
addiction
Believe it or not, converting a car to run on fryer grease is a very economical
way to get the best gas mileage around. If you frequent the fast food places in
your neighborhood you might just be able to weasel your way into getting their
used grease to run your car. Just don't blame us for the mess it makes when it
spills.
4) Dump the family bus
Unless you’re the Partridge Family, chances are you probably don’t need that extended-cab SUV to
visit the local mall. And as cool as it might be to have the largest monstrosity in the parking lot at Timmy’s soccer game, it will get old having to fill up your gas guzzler to AND from the game
each week.
3)
Pick up the midnight shift
Avoiding the constant stop and go in traffic can substantially lift your gas
mileage economy. And what better way to avoid traffic but work the shift only
the brave ones do, the midnight shift. No rush hour means more mpg!
Note:
savings may be offset by the amount of energy drink required to make it through
the shift.
2) Move to Venezuela
$.12 a gallon gas baby! ‘nuff said.
1) Buy a donkey
This one is simple - hauls ass and doesn't need gas!
